Vintage 2012

As we look out to green paddocks and dams filled to the brink we can’t believe we have just left summer. How different from other years when the dams were almost dry. The farm is lush! Late February to early March we had 40% of our rainfall in a week!! This is not the kind of dumping you want at vintage time. We were out there harvesting at double speed to beat the rain, and we just made it! Growing grapes and wine making has plenty of natural drama, rain & storms causing major blackouts in the middle of crushing grapes, and then there’s the man made, the spanner that turned up in the must pump adding an extra 6 long hours to the job at hand! The big rain has created havoc on grapes this season as it did last year. Wood Park being situated at the northern end of the King Valley has benefited from earlier ripening. We managed to get our fruit through a cooler summer and pick at optimum ripeness, full of flavour’s. Overall vintage for 2012 was extremely successful!! We very thankfully survived the big wet. The wines at this early stage are looking great! The standout so far is the Tempranillo, rich and dark at such a tender age but still about 2 years away from release. All the reds seem to have exceptional colour and the whites good natural acidity and lively flavour spectrum’s. White wines soon to be released are the Monument Lane Roussanne 2010, Whitland’s Pinot Gris 2012 and the Wild’s Gully Sweet Harvest 2012. In the red’s the 2009 Kneebone’s Gap Shiraz, 2009 Cabernet/Shiraz, 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010 Whitland’s Pinot Noir and the Wild’s Gully Rosso 2012. Our newest release wines being enjoyed now are the Wild’s Gully Tempranillo 2010, Forgotten Patch Sangiovese 2010 and the Premium Reserve Shiraz 2009. Other favourite’s include our 2010 Meadow Creek Chardonnay, The Kiln houses Semillon 2010 and our ever popular Preservative Free and Vegan Friendly wines, Classic Dry Red & Classic Dry White. So here’s, cheers to another successful season and as the Spanish would say… “Disfrutar del vino”, enjoy the wine!!
